Little houses don't come much more basic than the National and that may have been its appeal. It sold in 1935 for less than $1000 ... at about $1 a square foot. Built on a standard city lot surrounded by plants and flowers, a vegetable garden, with a shed in back for the bees, many homeowners would have considered this bungalow a bit of heaven on earth.
