The Imperial

1916 Sterling system Homes

The Imperial has all the characteristics of an American Foursquare, which was an eclectic house style that was highly popular from the 1890s to about 1930. It's origins are murky, but its essential elements are simple: it's a box with a pyramidal roof. Beyond that, they often incorporated elements from other contemporary styles like Prairie, Mission, or Colonial Revival, or drawing on previous styles like Queen Anne. They were economical to build which further endeared them to the American home buyer.

Sometimes called a Prairie Box (in Portland, Oregon we claim it as an Old Portland Style), Foursquares were large, comfortable houses with plenty of room for the average family. The Imperial is a quintessential example.
