Design No. 553

1926 Portland Homes Plan Book by Universal Plan Service

Plan 553 is good example of an eclectic style, which were very common during the 1920s. The stucco sidewalls and arched entry could be interpreted as Mediterranean, especially with the unusual parapeted front wall. Or just as easily, the shape of the facing entry with its catslide roof and relatively steep roof pitch could be called English Revival. These are decorative details; the massing of the plan and layout is modern. The chief advantage is that it may have appealed (or not!) to buyers for its chameleon-like character.
